As the Internet has matured into a crucial tool of commerce, IT departments have grown to keep pace, adding web developer, user experience designer and network security engineer into their existing employee portfolio, alongside the usual programmers, systems analysts and technical gurus needed to keep systems running.

Now there is also the cloud, and IT departments are adjusting to include additional skills associated with contract, vendor and customer relationship management. IT departments are scrambling to find the right people and to create an efficient operational hierarchy.

The hype around cloud services is extraordinarily high, but inevitably substance will surpass bluster. IT management must reorganize to integrate cloud services into the corporate context by increasing the number of “relationship managers” available – these mission critical resources must be sourced externally, they won’t be made available simply by retraining programmers.
